Rent a bike and discover Béziers and the surrounding area

Just passing through Béziers for a short time? We advise you to rent a bike from our partner agency and to discover the heritage of Béziers and the surrounding area! To get the most out of your rental bike, we have a few ideas for you.

Cycling around Béziers

Once you have rented your bike, we recommend that you visit Béziers by bike, which was founded in the 7th century BC and is the oldest city in France. Cycle into the old town and get a good view of the Orb river and the Canal du Midi. You can easily discover the historic centre and its charming streets. Put your bike down for a few moments to admire the Saint-Nazaire cathedral overlooking the city, a true emblem of Biterrois' heritage! Take the opportunity to admire the view over the whole of Béziers! Then get back on your bike to discover the city's garden, "Le Plateau des poètes", which contains numerous statues. Continuing your journey, you can also discover a mill dating from the medieval period near the Orb: the Moulin Cordier. Finally, pedal along the very pleasant Paul Riquet alleys. Don't hesitate to venture into the narrow streets in the heart of the city to make the most of Béziers.

Other points of interest accessible by bike that we recommend:

  • The arena
  • The Roman amphitheatre
  • The Saint-Aphrodise basilica
  • Saint-Jacques church
  • The canal bridge
  • The old bridge
  • The town hall
  • The chapel of the Pénitents bleus

Cycling in the area

There are many cycling routes around Béziers, here is our selection for a nice bike ride in the Béziers area.

The 9 locks of Fonseranes by bike

Of course, this is the must-see of the region. Leave Béziers by bike on the towpath of the Canal du Midi to go up the locks, in the shade of the plane trees. It's a bike ride that's accessible to everyone, our bike hire agency, Paulette Béziers, is located less than 3km from the Grand Site d'Occitanie. The bike ride allows children in particular to exercise and enjoy pedalling in complete safety away from the traffic! This is the ideal bike ride that will delight the whole family! The 9 locks of Fonseranes are a real engineering feat, take the time to appreciate this site and visit the Maison de Site du Coche d'eau! The 9 Fonseranes Locks are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and allow boats (8,000 each year) to cross a 22 metre slope! With a bit of luck, you will see them in operation! For those who want to pedal a little more, feel free to go beyond this must-see site and continue along the very pleasant Canal du Midi by bike before returning to Béziers at the end of the day. The advantage of cycling to and from Béziers is that you have complete control over the time you spend out.

Cycling in the heart of the Béziers vineyards

Go for a 30 kilometre bike ride (following our itinerary here) to discover the heritage of Béziers. Discover the Languedoc landscape on your way and pedal through the fig trees, pine trees and vineyards surrounding Béziers. Enjoy a quiet ride among the regional viticulture and a typical flora of the southern lands depending on the season (wild asparagus, rosemary, thyme...). We advise you to put down your rental bike to enjoy a little wine tasting. You can also discover the ancient fortified village of Corneilhan and get a bit of height from the belvedere. It takes a little extra effort on the bike but it's worth it.

A mountain bike ride in the Bois de Bourbaki

For mountain bikers, there is a route (offered by the Béziers Tourist Office) through the Bourbaki woods where "Béziers aventure" is also located, offering acrobranch courses. You can continue pedalling on the mountain bike route or take a break to enjoy the activities in the woods before returning to your hire bike. To get there, leave from the bike rental agency, Paulette Béziers, and take the Canal du Midi towards Sète to get to Cers and start the mountain bike route.

Discover the gardens of Saint-Adrien

Discover the gardens of Saint-Adrien by bike, 18 kilometres from Béziers, in a green area that is very well maintained by its owner. It is in fact an old quarry that he used to visit as a child and which he has developed. Today it is classified as a "Remarkable Garden" and then as a "French Favourite Garden". It is a calm and restful place with many benches at your disposal to rest. If you cycle in the area, go and discover this real haven of peace!

A bike ride along the Etang de Vendres

Another option is to take your bike to the Etang de Vendres, 17 kilometres from Béziers. Taking the route through Villeneuve-lès-Béziers and Sérignan allows you to cycle safely. Once there, you can cycle around the lagoon and the entire lagoon area of the Languedoc coastline for about 40 kilometres or just a few kilometres along it. The lagoon contains a fauna and flora typical of these open spaces along the sea, and in particular the eel. You will also see the reed bed, a semi-aquatic vegetation where rushes and reeds develop and shelter a large variety of birds, especially migratory ones, which come to nest there. Depending on the season, you may be lucky enough to spot a purple heron, a little bittern or a bittern, so keep your eyes peeled! It's a charming bike ride that's ideal for getting away from it all! The return to Béziers is, as on the outward journey, easily done by bike.

We hope these ideas will help you make the most of your bike hire in and around Béziers!
