Cycling Around the Gruissan Lagoon

Day 1

32 km
Following the waterâs edge
Your cycling journey begins in the heart of Narbonne, a former Roman city founded in 118 BCE. Pedal through the historic streets, passing the majestic Saint-Just-et-Saint-Pasteur Cathedralâthis Gothic sentinel has watched over the city for more than 800 years. Cross the Pont des Marchands, one of the last inhabited bridges in France, before joining the calm banks of the Canal de la Robine.
Like its sibling the Canal du Midi, the Robine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It leads you gently southward, where urban life slowly fades and nature takes center stage. You enter the Narbonnais wetlandsâa 650-hectare haven for egrets, storks, herons, and, in the right season, flamingos.
As you ride on, the étangs (saltwater lagoons) appear on the horizon. Ahead rises the Massif de la Clape, a rugged limestone formation that defines this stretch of coastline. Soon you arrive on the outskirts of Gruissan, a picturesque seaside village encircled by water and crowned by the iconic Barberousse Tower. Climb to the top for sweeping views of the lagoon, the salt flats, the stilted beach chalets, and the Mediterranean beyond.
Itâs the perfect spot for a waterside lunch in this former fishing village. The mood is mellow, the breeze gentle, and the cries of gulls echo across the water.
After lunch, hop back on your bike to complete the loop around the Gruissan lagoonâaccompanied by rustling reeds, lapping water, and birdsong. Youâll return to Narbonne along the Canal de la Robine, soaking up one last stretch of this peaceful ride between sea and lagoon.
Once back in town, take time to wander Narbonneâs historic streets. End your day under the glass roof of the Hallesâa southern food haven and a perfect place to celebrate your cycling adventure with a final glass… or a well-deserved tasting.
