From Bordeaux to La Rochelle

Day 1

50 km
Bordeaux → Blaye
Begin your journey from the heart of Bordeaux, pedaling along the Richelieu quays and through the lively Chartrons district. Soon, the urban buzz gives way to peaceful countryside. Follow a quiet cycle path winding between prestigious vineyards, stately châteaux, and tranquil backroads.
Take your time—this is wine country, after all. Stop for a tasting or a château visit. In Margaux, soak in the elegance of the Médoc. At Lamarque, hop aboard the Gironde ferry for a short estuary crossing. On the opposite bank, the UNESCO-listed citadel of Blaye greets you with panoramic views and storied ramparts—a memorable end to day one.

Day 2

65 km
Blaye → Mortagne sur Gironde
Leaving Blaye, ride along the right bank of the estuary through gentle landscapes and peaceful nature. Pass through the reed beds and wetlands of Braud-et-Saint-Louis—home to alders and migrating birds. The atmosphere grows wilder, more contemplative.
You’ll encounter oyster harbors and quaint villages en route to Mortagne-sur-Gironde. Perched above the estuary, this small town offers breathtaking views from its clifftop lookout. Down below, the marina invites a leisurely stroll.

Day 3

35 km
Mortagne sur Gironde → Royan
A shorter ride today, but full of discoveries. First stop: Talmont-sur-Gironde, one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Its Romanesque church, set atop a cliff, watches over the estuary.
Continue past secret beaches, troglodyte caves in Meschers, and dramatic cliffs. This stretch feels pristine and untouched. As Royan comes into view, the vibe shifts—modernist architecture, seaside energy, and a vibrant promenade. Enjoy a dip or a local treat to end the day.

Day 4

41 km
Royan → La Tremblade
Ride the coastline toward Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. Your path winds through pine forests and past windswept cliffs. Stop at the Devil’s Bridge—a dramatic viewpoint above the crashing waves.
Cross the untamed beaches of La Palmyre and spot the towering Coubre lighthouse. Climb its steps for a sweeping 360° view. Finish in La Tremblade, known for its oyster huts and salt marshes. Optional detour: Mornac-sur-Seudre (another Most Beautiful Village) or even Île d’Oléron if time allows.

Day 5

48 km
La Tremblade → Rochefort
A day of marshes and maritime heritage. Cross the Seudre viaduct with panoramic views of oyster beds. Stop in Marennes—oyster capital of the region—for a briny tasting session.
Then head to Brouage, a postcard-worthy fortified village. Pedal through canals, stork-filled fields, and ancient polders before arriving in Rochefort. Once home to the French navy and the reconstructed frigate Hermione, this historic port town is full of surprises.

Day 6

50 km
Rochefort → La Rochelle
Your final day begins along the Charente River, then leads through Atlantic coastal marshes. Pause in Châtelaillon-Plage for one last swim—or an ocean-view picnic.
Finally, you arrive in La Rochelle—a gem of the Atlantic coast. Its three medieval towers guard the old port, and the city buzzes with cafés, arcades, and cyclists. Drop off your bike at our local partner, then treat yourself: explore the historic center, stroll the waterfront, and enjoy a well-earned seafood platter to celebrate the journey.
