Welcome to La Vélodyssée, a spectacular cycling route leading you from Bordeaux to Hendaye, through pine forests, golden dunes, and Atlantic beaches. Over eight days, you’ll ride along the ocean, crossing the Landes, the Arcachon Bay, shimmering lakes, and the Basque Country—all along a safe, scenic, and varied itinerary. The scent of pines, the song of cicadas, the ocean breeze, and charming coastal villages create a uniquely freewheeling experience. A perfect ride with a hybrid or electric bike, made effortless with Paulette’s one-way bike rental.

Day 1

69 km

Bordeaux → Lacanau-Océan

Start at Paulette’s Bordeaux agency (13 rue Villedieu), and roll onto the Garonne quays. The Water Mirror and Place de la Bourse set the scene for your first pedal strokes. Pass through the Chartrons district and cross the ring road to find yourself surrounded by greenery.

Ride through Le Bouscat, Eysines, and Saint-Médard-en-Jalles—where a former railway line now forms a forested greenway to Lacanau. Cycle among towering pines, past old stations and alongside Lake Lacanau before reaching the Atlantic. Breathe in the sea air, take a dip, or enjoy a sunset on the beach.

Day 2

37 km

Lacanau-Océan → Lège-Cap-Ferret

You’re now fully on La Vélodyssée. Today’s ride cuts through vast pinewoods, with the ocean always nearby. Follow the rhythm of waves along wild dunes and beaches.

Gradually approach Arcachon Bay via Lège-Cap-Ferret, a land of oyster huts and peaceful harbors. Sample oysters by the water, or pedal on to the very tip of the Cap. A ferry can take you across the bay to Arcachon, or you can cycle around for a longer coastal ride.

Day 3

43 km

Lège-Cap-Ferret → Arcachon

Continue on the old railway route through forests, beachside villages, and oyster farms. At Biganos, the trail draws closer to the bay, offering wonderful water views.

Stop at Larros Port to visit the Oyster House and learn all about oyster farming. A delicious seafood lunch here is a must—the perfect combination of cycling and coastal indulgence.

Day 4

61 km

Arcachon → Parentis-en-born

Start early to climb the Dune of Pilat before it gets too hot. The panoramic view over the bay, forest, and Arguin sandbank is unforgettable.

Ride onward to Biscarrosse-Plage, then tackle hillier terrain past the lakes of Cazaux and Sanguinet. Woodland beaches invite you for a swim. Finish the day in Parentis-en-Born, nestled deep in the Landes, where forest, sand, and freshwater meet.

Day 5

30 km

Parentis-en-born → Mimizan

Begin your day at the peaceful Piaou Port. Leave the lakes behind and ride through the Landes’ quiet inland—among shaded dunes and still ponds.

The Sainte-Eulalie forest offers cool shade before you return to the ocean at Mimizan. Treat yourself to a soft, anise-flavored Pastis Landais, a local delight. This shorter stage is perfect for recharging.

Day 6

58 km

Mimizan → Vieux Boucau

Cycle through forests planted in the 19th century to drain the once-swampy Landes. This man-made wilderness is now rich in natural beauty.

At Contis, climb the black-and-white lighthouse—183 steps to sweeping views. The trail becomes more hilly, with beach stops at Cap de l’Homy or Saint-Girons.

Pause at Léon Lake before arriving in Vieux-Boucau, a lively coastal town nestled between sea and canal. Beaches, former harbors, and easy living await.

Day 7

63 km

Vieux-Boucau → Biarritz

Start under pine shade and emerge onto the Côte d’Argent. In Seignosse, Hossegor, and Capbreton, stop for a market, a swim, or a seaside café.

Welcome to the Basque Country. Hills grow steeper, views more dramatic. The pavement may be uneven at times, adding a touch of challenge. Bayonne is a perfect stop—cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and a Basque spirit fill the air.

Continue through Anglet and arrive in Biarritz—where ocean meets mountains, and elegant villas line the shore. A stylish end to a spectacular stage.

Day 8

30 km

Biarritz → Hendaye

The final stretch—short but hilly! Hang in there: the views are more than worth it.

Take in Belle Époque villas and sweeping sea vistas as you leave Biarritz. Ride through Bidart, then descend into Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a Basque gem on the Atlantic.

The route to Hendaye is doable but less bike-friendly. For a smoother journey, hop on the TER from Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Hendaye, on the Spanish border, marks the end of your ride. You’ve done it: the Atlantic Coast, from Bordeaux to Spain, on La Vélodyssée.
