How many days does it take to cycle the Canal Latéral à la Garonne?

This is a much asked question, but the answer depends on several criteria. The bike you are using, whether you are travelling with children, whether you are heavily laden, the number of kilometres per day you wish to cover, the season you are travelling in and therefore the weather conditions... We will help you to see a little more clearly!

Estimate the pace of your journey.

The pace of travel is different for everyone, so we advise you to think about these different questions in order to determine the length of your journey:

  • Do you want to ride the entire route from Bordeaux to Toulouse, or only cycle one or two stages of the route?
  • Do you want to follow the canal and pedal along the towpaths without leaving them, or do you want to branch off to discover the surrounding area and take time to visit the villages you will pass through?
  • If you are travelling with others, do you have the same rhythm as the other travellers?
  • Are you used to cycling? In any case, it is important to bear in mind that as the days go by, fatigue quickly builds up and you will feel the aches and pains, so you will be less efficient.
  • Are you constrained by different imperatives, do you pace your stay according to your different accommodation locations or your accommodation according to your pace?

What are the different stages of the course?

There are not really any stages that you must stop at or that you must cycle through, we are only tracing the points of interest that we feel are relevant and where you are more likely to find accommodation, a gîte, a hotel, a campsite where you can stop to spend the night.

The Garonne Canal: from Bordeaux to Toulouse is 268 kilometres long. Cyclists who use the canal usually do the following stages:
1. Toulouse - Montech (47km)
2. Montech- Agen (66km)
3. Agen-Marmande (58km)
4. Marmande- Sauveterre-de-Guyenne (41)
5. Sauveterre-de-Guyenne- Bordeaux ( 56km)

How long do we recommend?

The classic pace is suitable for people who will ride between adults and between 4 and 5 hours per day and thus cover 41 to 58 kilometres. If this is the right pace for you, you will need 5 days to ride from Bordeaux to Toulouse.

If you are travelling with children, elderly people, or just want to take time to visit the area, the "slow" pace is ideal. We advise you to travel for about 8 days. However, it is up to you to estimate the exact number of days depending on the number of "excursions" you wish to make. You should know that going from Bordeaux to Toulouse in 8 days allows you to cover an average of 33 kilometres per day.

Finally, the "sporty" rhythm corresponds to the most seasoned among you. If you decide to travel the canal at a high pace and without discovering much or any of the surrounding area, you can cover the 268 kilometres of the Canal Latéral à la Garonne in 3 days. This means that you will be cycling about 90 kilometres per day.
