Vélotaf: What equipment should you choose for the best experience?

Velotafing, or cycling to work, is becoming increasingly popular for its many health, environmental and quality of life benefits. If you're thinking of adopting this environmentally-friendly and energising practice, choosing the right equipment is very important to making your experience pleasant and safe. In this article, you'll find a few tips to help you get the right equipment !

1- Safety first:

The most important thing is to guarantee your safety, so it's essential to pay attention to your lighting, signage and the condition of your bike's brakes. Make sure you're visible, especially in low light, by equipping your bike with front and rear lights, as well as reflectors on the wheels. These will improve your visibility on the road. Don't forget to use lights to indicate when you're changing direction. As well as being visible, letting people know you're there is just as important for avoiding danger and potential obstacles. For this, a functional bell is essential. Finally, to be able to react effectively in tricky situations, you should always check the condition of your brakes. We recommend that you opt for hydraulic disc brakes.

2- Clothing for all conditions:

Adapt your clothing to the weather. Equip yourself with a mackintosh to cope with the rain, a windbreaker to protect you from the wind, and sun protection for sunny days. Choose breathable materials to prevent the build-up of perspiration, keeping you comfortable throughout your journey. What's more, don't forget to layer up depending on the temperature, and don't forget accessories such as gloves or a hat for extra protection in cold weather. This way, your outfit will fit perfectly in all weather conditions, guaranteeing a pleasant journey, whatever the weather.

3- Wearing a helmet:

n the event of a fall, the helmet is the key piece of equipment. Choose a comfortable model that fits your head properly and is certified to provide optimum protection in the event of impact. Some models even have a light at the back, adding an extra layer of safety.

Although helmets are not compulsory for adults in France, we can't recommend them enough. However, they are essential for children under the age of 12.

4- Install mudguards

Keeping your trousers and shoes clean in the rain? Nothing could be simpler than adding mudguards. These metal strips, which need to be fitted over the wheels of your bike, act as an effective barrier against splashes. Although this modification may slightly alter the aesthetics of your bike, it's essential for protecting your work clothes on rainy days.

5- A good anti-theft device:

The worst thing would be to have your means of transport stolen on your way to work! To avoid this, invest in a strong enough lock to secure your bike when you're at work. U-shaped locks are among the most effective and recommended for deterring thieves, as they are virtually impossible to cut without special high-performance equipment.

6- A saddlebag:

Fitting a bag to your bike is essential! As well as being practical, it means you don't have to use a rucksack, so you won't crease your work clothes or sweat. Opt for a bag with a large capacity, ideal for holding your business effects, your computer, or even your shopping if you need to do some shopping before heading home. It's an accessory that combines comfort and functionality to make your daily commute easier.

7. Tyres for everyday use :

Tyres are the point of direct contact with the road, and given the daily use of your bike to get to work. It's vital to choose hard-wearing tyres to minimise the risk of punctures. So choose the type of tyre that best suits the route and condition of the road you cycle on every day. We strongly advise you to invest in puncture-resistant tyres to avoid unpleasant surprises. By adapting your tyres to your regular route, you optimise the durability of your tyres and reduce the risk of breakdowns.

8. Regular maintenance:

The reliability of your bike depends very much on the maintenance it receives. Give your means of transport the attention it deserves, just as you would your car. To ensure its longevity and constant reliability, regular maintenance is essential. Carry out regular checks on tyre pressure, the condition of the brakes and the transmission to ensure smooth journeys.
