Discover Argelès-sur-Mer and its surroundings by bike

Argelès-sur-Mer is a renowned Mediterranean seaside resort...and not only that! Indeed, the town has a vast network of cycle routes allowing you to discover landscapes of rare beauty - between the sea, the plains and the mountains - and to explore an entire territory - from the coast to the Tour de la Massane for the more sporty! The area around Argelès-sur-Mer is covered by an extensive network of roads and paths that allow for a variety of cycling activities - from urban two-wheelers to downhill mountain bikes and cycle tourism. The mild Catalan climate also makes cycling a pleasure for most of the year!

Enjoying cycle tourism in Argelès-sur-Mer

Over the last few years, the Pyrénées-Orientales department has developed a number of greenways that allow you to discover the riches of the Catalan countryside in complete tranquillity. Amongst these, the Agly Valley route, linking Port-Barcarès to Rivesaltes, offers cyclists 15 kilometres of calm and safety. On the coast, a beautiful 5-kilometre green trail open to bikes, scooters and pedestrians links Saint-Cyprien to Canet-en-Roussillon.

Argelès-sur-Mer is also at the crossroads of two important routes. On the one hand, the Vélittorale, corresponding to a track of the Mediterranean Eurovéloroute (EV8) linking Athens to Cadiz, and on the other hand, the Voie Verte Pyrénées-Méditerranée, a 15-kilometre long track, linking Argelès-sur-Mer to Le Boulou.

The Vélittorale is a 35-kilometre long cycle route that will run from Le Barcarès to Argelès-sur-Mer along the coastline. The first section of the project concerned the Barcarès-Canet itinerary, a 13-kilometre route made up of 70% greenway and punctuated by two footbridges. This part of the Vélittorale was extended in 2016 by a further 10 kilometres, along the Etang de Canet and between Saint-Cyprien and Argelès-sur-Mer. Thus, from the commune of Argelès-sur-Mer, the Vélittorale allows you to discover the creeks located between Racou and Collioure, starting from the Mas Larrieu National Nature Reserve.

The cycle route in the Mediterranean Pyrenees is a family cycle route that links Argelès-sur-Mer to the spa town of Le Boulou along the Albères massif. This ride is ideal for families! Direct and easy, it can be taken with children to discover the architectural and natural riches of these Catalan lands.

Fun on the mountain bike trails

In addition to the greenways and classic cycle tourism routes, Roussillon offers a multitude of remarkable itineraries for mountain bike enthusiasts. A multitude of trails between the plains, the mountains, the sea and the oak and beech forests will inevitably provide an escape. The area around Argelès-sur-Mer is full of trails of different levels, from the easiest and most family-friendly to the most technical - vineyard paths; undergrowth; beachfronts and creeks.

The town is in the immediate vicinity of the Massif des Albères, an advantage for mountain biking: significant differences in altitude, technical climbs and the possibility of fun and easy rides for the whole family. It is also possible to go on an excursion to the gardens of Roussillon, an outing of 25 kilometres and enjoy the calm of the countryside. The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Vie and Saint Jérôme is also worth seeing. After a 15 kilometre circuit on a path reserved for the initiated, the discovery of a beautiful heritage will be on the agenda. If you want to discover green and marine landscapes, the Chemin du Liège is the perfect route. A lovely 20 kilometre route through vineyards and cork oaks that will delight the most experienced mountain bikers.

Also, Tourisme Pyrénées Orientales and the numerous websites listing the routes generally propose mountain bike circuits in the form of loops, allowing you to discover the richness of the cultural heritage, the surrounding nature and to enjoy wonderful panoramas on the Vermeille coast.

Practical information and useful websites

For the curious, the beginner, the nature lover or the cycling expert, the Tourist Office of the Pyrénées Orientales provides tourists and locals with a complete guide to the region's cycle paths. All the mountain bike and hiking trails are listed. Thus, more than 100 kilometres of marked routes adapted to all levels of practice - stroll, trail, rando' - between sea an
