That is a good question! And here is our answer.
At Paulette's, we believe that there is no good or bad time for cycling.
It is all about anticipation and equipment. Let us explain it to you. It is important to anticipate and prepare your outings to a minimum. Think about your gloves in winter, your water reserve in summer.
It is also a question of destination. Cycling in the depths of Siberia in the middle of winter, is not recommended (is it possible at least?). So, good news for cycling lovers or beginners: it is possible to cycle any day of the year! In winter, favor regions where the climate is milder, such as the south of France, with the Canal des 2 mers by bike and the Mediterranean by bike. In summer, the trails further north will be appreciated. The Vélodyssée will even let you enjoy the freshness of the Atlantic (and very regular swimming breaks).
In any case, nature will know how to fill your eyes, whatever the season! All you must do is choose your own itinerary. Isn't life beautiful?
In the meantime, Paulette has prepared a recap of what awaits you on your bike for each season!
Cycling in winter
Advantages:
- Bicycle paths are yours! Many are too cold, and that is better for you!
Disadvantages:
- Not surprisingly, we name... the cold! But that should not stop you.
- Maybe you have not thought about it, but in winter the days get shorter, so it is day later and night earlier. Convenient for pedaling, eh? So, the low light will not be your ally.
What you must think about:
- Multiply the underlayers! You will finally find a use for the sweater your granny knitted for you for Christmas.
- To protect you from humidity: we would not want you to catch a cold...
- Protect your extremities: opt for gloves or sleeves that you leave on your handlebars, a hood, or a Buff-style scarf to protect the bottom of your face.
- Be visible: take out your yellow vest and ride in the middle of the road to be easily spotted by drivers.
- Be aware of the condition of the ground: beware of ice!
- Have your bike revised.
- Protect your children: remember to bundle them up, especially if they do not pedal, they will not warm up with the effort like you do.

Cycling in the spring
Advantages:
- Good news: the temperatures are milder.
- You will fill up with vitamin D thanks to the first rays of sunshine!
- Camping becomes more pleasant: you will no longer die of cold in your tent and you will wake up with the tweeting of the birds. What more could you ask for?
Disadvantages:
- Rain: we are not yet in summer, so beware of weather surprises!
What you must think about:
- Your raincoat and sunscreen. Contradictory, we grant you, but the weather can be capricious in some regions and the first sunburns are not long in coming.
- Pay attention to the state of the ground: the last frosts can be treacherous.
- Your antihistamines: we do not know about you, but we and pollens are not a great love story.
Cycling in summer
Advantages:
- The life on the routes and the good atmosphere: you will have lots of encounters and make plenty of memories!
- The perfect season for camping!
Disadvantages:
- The strong heat and the heat wave. You can organize yourself to avoid them: leave early in the morning and enjoy an afternoon by the pool (with a cocktail of course).
- The non-shaded areas on the tracks.
- The frequentation of the slopes.
What you must think about:
- Having enough water on you or knowing the position of water points to fill your water bottles.
- Your sunscreen. You can never be told enough! Remember to spread yourself regularly: cycling tanning is really not so good on the beaches...
Cycling in autumn
Advantages:
- If you are lucky, you will be able to enjoy an Indian summer and the last beautiful days of the off-season. The summer and its strong heats are behind you, the temperatures are milder.
- The opportunity to admire the beauty of the autumn landscapes.
Disadvantages:
- The weather, once again. Temperatures are beginning to drop, and the rain is coming down.
What you must think about:
- Your raincoat, once again (but you will thank us when you come back home dry).
You will have understood it, all seasons are good when it comes to cycling! So, don't forget to equip yourself accordingly and meet us on the tracks!
